Professor Alan Harvey
Professor Alan Harvey has a PhD in Pharmacology from the University of Strathclyde, and an MBA from the Open University. He is a fellow of Institute of Biology (FIBiol), C. Biol. He is a founding Director of the Strathclyde Institute for Drug Research (SIDR), and has been Director for twenty two years. This is a self-funding organisation of Strathclyde University that develops commercially relevant drug research and facilitates interactions with industry worldwide. Alan has been responsible for all aspects of SIDR’s activities: project selection, marketing, negotiating, project management, and natural product-based drug discovery. 1986 to the present, he has been Professor, Institute of Pharmacy and Biomedical Sciences, University of Strathclyde; this is a research position in charge of a neuropharmacology laboratory that explores the properties of toxins acting on ion channels and receptors. He supervises and coordinates the natural products drug discovery unit. He has published 140 refereed research papers, 76 scientific reviews and book chapters, written two books(“The Pharmacology of Nerve and Muscle in Tissue Culture”, and “Natural Products Pharmaceuticals: A Diverse Approach to Drug Discovery”, and edited nine technical volumes. He provides expert consultancy services to pharmaceutical, biotechnology and business development companies on a wide range of technologies.
