Professor Kanfer was appointed as the first Professor of Pharmaceutics at Rhodes University in 1980 and served as Head of Pharmacy at Rhodes University and Dean of the Faculty from 1999- 2007. He obtained his BSc (Pharmacy), BSc(Honours) and PhD in Pharmaceutics at Rhodes University. He was appointed as a member of the South African Medicines Control Council (MCC) from 1999–2004, served as Chairperson of the Expert Committee (Analytical), and also chaired the MCC’s Complementary Medicines Committee. He has supervised 34 postgraduate students (MSc & PhD and post-doctoral fellows) and has contributed to over 200 research publications and conference presentations and is co-editor of 4 books. Professor Kanfer was the recipient of the Rhodes University Vice Chancellor’s Distinguished Senior Research award for 2007. In addition to his other research interests, he also established a Phytochemical Research programme at Rhodes University which involves research into Complementary and African Traditional Medicines where several post-graduate students have completed their MSc and PhD degrees on topics such as St. John`s Wort (Ms.T.Wild – MSc), Gingko Biloba (Dr.M-J.Dubber – PhD), African Potato (Dr.V.Nair – PhD; Ms,S.Mogatle-MSc), Sceletium species (Dr. S.Patnala-PhD and Post-Doctoral Research Fellowship) and Sutherlandia species (Ms.A.Müller–current PhD project). He is currently Associate Editor of the Journal of Pharmacy & Pharmaceutical Sciences and was elected as Emeritus Professor of Pharmacy, Rhodes University in 2008.
