Farmlink – Rise of health- conscious consumer part 1

At the start of every year, we enter the prediction season and just about everybody who has a voice in the global food and beverage industry, has had his or her say on what can be expected for this industry. Although the food and beverage industry is unpredictable as ever,Farmlink selected from amongst these predictions what we regard as the top seven food and beverage trends for 2013. The first and probably main trend (which comes as no surprise) is naturalness — the theme for 2013 seems to be natural and healthy, as most of the other trends can be traced back to the core motivation of health-consciousness based on naturalness. Natural The dominating natural trend of 2012 will continue … Continue reading

Nigel Gericke and Deon Hofmeyer

Two SA professionals who otherwise work in completely different fields, a medical doctor and a horticulturist, have worked together for over a decade to come up with an answer to help deal with our stressful lives. Nigel Gericke, the medical doctor, and Deon Hofmeyr, the horticulturist, started working together in 1996. Hofmeyr, then a director of The Office Plant and Lifestyle Nurseries, was looking for opportunities arising from the medicinal use of plants. Gericke had previously been extensively involved in ethnobotanical field research on the indigenous uses of plants in the Namaqualand area. Three years later the two invested in extensive studies on Sceletium, a plant that had been used for generations by the San communities of Namaqualand for general … Continue reading

Thomas, out of New Jersey, to launch the Zembrin brand of Sceletium tortuosum. We like the published safety study, which noted “unsolicited positive effects on well being.” We like the follow-up published double-blind, placebo-controlled, crossover trial on healthy Canadians. The study was for three active weeks with a two-week washout, fi nding brain-health benefi … Continue reading
